Elderly Transportation Services

Purpose

The Northside Senior Transportation Program was started 1994 to provide safe, dependable and effective transportation to enable elderly citizens of the City of St. Louis the mobility necessary to improve their quality of life and to remain living independently.

Background

The program began with one 15 passenger van financed by local contributions. The van was used to provide local transportation to seniors participating in Northside Community Center, Inc. activities. These local funding sources were matched by the Missouri Elderly and Handicapped Transportation Assistance Program (MEHTAP).

In 2004, Northside received a generous grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health to purchase two additional 15 passenger vans. In 2007, Northside was awarded a grant from the Daughters of Charity Healthcare Foundation of St. Louis to replace an aging vehicle in our fleet. The award provided a match to an award received through Section 5310 of the Federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. The primary purpose of the program is to help local non-profit organizations purchase vehicles to provide transportation for older citizens and people with disabilities when other public transportation is unavailable or insufficient.
